Slovak Paradise – Nature´s Vertical Kingdom

posted in: Nature | 2

Directly opposite the majestic Tatras lays a national park which, at a glance, does not have the same breathtaking, skyscraping peaks nor the heights which leave you lightheaded, but don´t let this discourage you. The beauty of this park lies in its mysterious woods, deep gorges and wild streams and rivers. Without a doubt, a natural theatrical spectacle which requires not only desire, but also physical fitness to be fully discovered. Only an adventurous soul will take on the ad-lib hopping over streams, overcoming of high ladders and be brave enough to peer into the depths this national park offers. Don´t let this deter you, the reward will be unforgettable.
A first in a series of national parks which will be sequentially presented…

SLOVAK PARADISE IN A NUTSHELL

WILD  ROMANTIC  CHAINS  LADDERS DEEP MISTY GORGES  NATURE  UNESCO RAVINES ADVENTURE VERTICAL VIEWS ROCKY CAVES HIKES

DISCOVER THE BREATHTAKING BEAUTY

A world of gorges; dozens of waterfalls; deep, mysterious caves; mistic woods full of ladders and bridges: this all awaits you when you step into Slovak Paradise. That is only the beginning. Additionally, one can, for example, climb the Raven´s Rock (Havrania skala) or the Tomášovský Viewpoint (Tomášovský výhľad) from which the amazing world far below can be admired. For early birds, we recommend the view of the morning Tatra Mountains from this viewpoint.

EXPLORE ANOTHER DIMENSION OF THE NATURE

Discover nature´s vertical beauty in Slovak Paradise. Each gorge is secured by dozens of ladders, chains, and climbing irons which will take you over steep cliffs to crystal-clear waterfalls. The way is full of incredible views of the blue skies above and lakes far below.

HAVE AN ADVENTURE

Overcoming steep cliffs, dizzying heights and wild rivers and streams is not all that Slovak Paradise has to offer; it is also packed with ample opportunities for adventure. From canoeing down the river Hornád, to rock-climing and mountain biking, the Paradise has it all. The more demanding extreme adventurers, who don´t mind a bit of ice and snow, can strap on a pair of crampons, grab an ice ax and take on the icefalls in the wintertime.

ENJOY UNESCO SIGHTS

Bad weather? No fear. You can admire the frozen allure of the Dobšiná Ice Cave (the first in the world to be electrically lit) directly in the heart of the Slovak Paradise. If that is not enough, then two UNESCO sights are, literally, a rock´s throw away from the entrance to the national park. The Spiš Castle (one of the largest in the world) and the astounding renaissance pearl Levoča are right next door.

WHERE-HOW-WHEN?

Web: Official (Slovak only), Touristic (English, German, French Available)

  • You will find information about entrance fees here (translator used)
  • We recommend purchasing mountain insurance prior to your trip through one of the insurance providers listed here
  • Starting points of the hikes (click for location): Podlesok, Píla Piecky, Letanovský Mlyn or Čingov, Dedinky and Stratená
  • Accommodation in the townships Hrabušice or Čingov  (possibility of staying at Kláštorisko cottage)
  • Best time to visit – in principle does not matter; however, in the winter, waterfalls become icefalls and, in turn, climbing equipment is imperative

Getting there – via

airplane to Poprad International Airport and/or  train (from Bratislava, Prague as well as Budapest with a stopover in Košice), by car via D1 highway to Poprad

Welcome to the castle country – Top 20 castles in Slovakia

posted in: Culture, Top | 17

Various tourist guidebooks and promotional materials claim that Slovakia has the most castles per capita worldwide. This may come as a shock considering the size of the country. Regardless, the purpose of this article is not to examine the truth behind this claim and the amount of castles presented here is far from final. What is certain, however, is that when you find yourself at a viewpoint or even while passing through this country, you will see countless castles and ruins covering endless hills. Why such a high density of castles? The mountainous relief of the country required the construction of numerous castles and fortresses for defense of trade routes and protection from enemy invasion. As a result, many of these castles have now become one of the main symbols of Slovakia: the castle country. Today, we show you our selection of the 20 most exquisite. Of course, it is next to impossible to visit all 20 during a short visit, but that only gives you an excuse to visit again :).Without further ado, welcome to castle country. Enjoy and share!

20 DARK SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Have you heard of Countess Bathory and her evil past? It is likely as her deeds are well-known. A significant portion of these deeds took place in the town of Čachtice and this castle was where she was sent to repent for her sins and live out the remainder of her life. She, literally, remains within the castles walls until today as, it is rumored, they were chosen to be her burial place as a punishment. Her body was never found.  Today when you walk through its corridors and relish the views of the peaceful countryside surrounded by a wreath of the Small Carpathian mountains, it is hard to imagine that such horrendous events took place in such a near vicinity. Nevertheless, regardless of its disturbing past, the Čachtice castle is a popular tourist destination (or maybe because of it?).

19 HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ABOUT TINKERS?

Budatín castle, the pride of the city of Žilina. Its beautiful setting at the confluence of two rivers and its extensive park captivate at a glance. There is, however, an even more intriguing reason to visit. Have you heard of the tinker´s craft? Did you know that it laid the foundations of modern business? If not, a unique exhibition will reveal the secrets of this historical craft.

18 A RUIN THAT WILL AMAZE YOU

It can be seen from afar standing on a massive, steep cliff making you wonder if the architect was crazy. Its beautiful, well-preserved ruins of a Gothic chapel, from which there is an enchanting view of the surrounded landscape dominated by the river Vah, is a must-see gem. Welcome to the Beckov castle!

17 A TREE THAT REMEMBERS KINGS

If you´re heading from Banska Bystrica to the Horehronie region, you cannot miss an appealing castle on a hill with a backdrop of the majestic Low Tatras National Park. This recently reconstructed Ľupča castle offers not only impressive history and breathtaking panoramic views or its surroundings, but also an encounter with reportedly one of the oldest trees in Europe: the basswood of King Matthias. In the image above, it is on the right of the castle in the castle´s courtyard.

16 EAGLE´S NEST VIEW

It is well-known that the Spiš castle is famous for its size. What is not-so-well-known, however, is that the castle of Lietava takes the second place in size due to its great expanse. Steep and inaccessible cliffs protected the castle from raids to such an extent that the castle was considered impregnable in the Middle Ages. And it remains unimpregnated until today. During its glory days, however, according to legend, it was deceitfully robbed by the folk hero Juraj Jánošík. Over the years, it gradually transformed from a castle to a ruin; as its importance waned the lordship of the castle began to lose interest. Presently it is being revived by an association created to rescue the castle and their hard work over the years is reflected in its present state. Admission is free, but the association appreciates small contributions which go towards its continuous renovation.

15 VIEW TO DIE FOR

An ancient landmark of the center of the remarkable Banská Štiavnica, built on a projection of the headland symptomatically named “Paradise”, has reigned this city since the Middle Ages. Inside, you will find everything from a fortress to a medieval cemetery to a church and a magnificent courtyard. Welcome to the Old Castle. Wander through corridors of the Dark Ages and walk to the top of the Church tower for a reward: a view of the medieval Štiavnica, simply unforgettable.

14 MYSTERIOUS STORY

If you are travelling from Bratislava to the Tatras by car, watch for a majestic castle towering high over the river Vah. The Strečno castle, presently a museum with incredible views of the surrounding mountains and a gateway to the National Fatra Park, hides a much more significant priceless, implausible “exhibit”. It is the story of the Countess Sophia Bosniakova, revered as a non-canonized saint, whose body was found perfectly intact, while all surrounding corpses were decomposed. Her body was destroyed by a fire a few years ago, but, thanks to the efforts of the castle´s administrators,  you can admire a very close replica modeled to its original form.

13 ITALIAN RENAISSANCE IN THE HEART OF EUROPE

When King Louis I had this castle built, he, logically, hired skilled architects and stonemasons. It was built and sumptuously decorated in the spirit of Italian Renaissance. The king searched for a setting in the woods where he could, uninterrupted from the court, hunt in lavish hunting castle grounds. Today, the castle of Zvolen lies in the outskirts of the bustling main square, yet, it has not lost any of its renaissance charm. The castle is not only the pride of the city of Zvolen but also the center of countless cultural events.

12 GOLDEN CASTLE OVER GOLDEN TOWN

The castle of Kremnica is a conspicuous dominance of the city. It is actually a complex of buildings that were gradually built over centuries, of which the most important is the church of St. Catherine. Here, organ concerts are held annually due to its excellent acoustics. Those who´d like to get to know Kremnica and admire the spectacular views of surrounding hills and the historical heart of the former golden treasury of the kingdom, should definitely pay this castle a visit.

11 JOURNEY TOWARDS ITS PAST GLORY

First, it was set afire and destroyed by Napoleonic troops. For many years after, the ruins were a symbol of the city, depicted in many paintings and postcards. A complete disintegration of the castle was only a matter of time. Fortunately, the communist regime realized its importance for Bratislava and decided to commence reconstruction. Unfortunately, this reconstruction rather degraded the castle´s cultural value. Recently a complete restoration of the castle´s historicism took place and, with the completion of the grounds and baroque gardens in accordance with their historical origins, it seems that the castle has been fully reattributed to its faded glory and will become an important place for culture and tourism.

10 IN THE MOTHER OF SLOVAK TOWNS

Nitra is referred to as the mother of all Slovak cities. However, when you visit her castle and admire the breathtaking views of this city and the nearby hill named “Zobor”, it may be hard to believe. The city is decorated mostly by towers of baroque churches and the city shows little signs of such old history. This is because its the castle itself which conceals traces of its glorious past which extends to the times of Great Moravia. Hence, while admiring the sumptuous splendor of the St. Emeram Cathedral also ask about the grave of St. Svorad and the foundations of the first Great-Moravian Christian church in Slovakia, dating back to the 9th century.

9 RENAISSANCE JEWEL

One of the most beautiful examples of Spiš Renaissance and one of the reasons why the city of Kežmarok has proven to be a worthy opponent of the nearby city Levoča. A beautiful castle in a historical city with a large courtyard which regularly hosts cultural events. If your trip to the Tatra´s is interrupted by rain, this is the place to visit: the Kežmarok castle.

8 AN IMPORTANT PLACE FOR THE POLISH HISTORY

Magnificent Ľubovňa castle placed in a mystic, mountainous environment with an old open-air museum directly beneath it. If the weather permits, it provides spectacular views of majestic Tatra Mountains. What may come as a surprise is that, for some time, this castle hid Polish crown jewels. During the 19th century the originals were destroyed by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II, but the replicas can still be admired here. Furthermore, for a taste of medieval atmosphere, attend the medieval banquet directly at the castle.

7 INCREDIBLE HISTORY ON INDREDIBLE LOCATION

The Devín castle: one of the most eye-catching symbols of Slovakia. It towers over a steep cliff at the confluence of the river Morava and the imposing river Danube, providing a view of the Austrian lowlands with a backdrop of the Austrian Alps. A castle with a more-than-a-thousand year old history which was reigned by various ethnicities throughout its history. Sadly, it didn´t survive the presence of Napoleon´s troops, who blew it up – just for fun. Interested in visiting it? Just hop on a bus under the New Bridge in Bratislava or right outside of the Eurovea shopping center. Bratislava is a city of two magnificent castles.

6 ONE WORD – THE CELLARS!

It is coveniently located near Bratislava. Its setting, grounds, gardens and interior are mesmerizing. The real treasure; however, is hidden beneath. If you dare to examine its undergrounds, you will discover one of the largest cellars of any castle in the world. Its surprisingly tremendous layout was used for storing wine and is presently used for cultural events. The subterrane of the Červený Kameň (Red Stone) castle also reveals how it got its name.

5 STORY OF LOVE ABOVE A MAGNIFICIENT CITY

Here, you can find the well of love which, according to an ancient myth, Turk Omar had dug in order to rescue Fatima from the captivity of nobleman Stephen Zápoľský. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. The incredible setting of the castle on a steep escarpment above the city enclosed by the river Vah changed very little throughout history thanks to its hard-to-penetrate location. Furthermore, there is no higher or better place in Trenčín than the tower of Matthew for an astonishing view.

4 PHOENIX RISING FROM THE ASHES

Krasna Hôrka was one of the most beautiful Slovak castles, admired by thousands of tourists from all over the world yearly. Why are we using the past tense? In March 2012, this priceless monument was ravaged by a devastating fire and it seemed that the history of the castle had reached its end. But, miraculously, the fire inflicted its damages only on the roof and the interior of the castle remained nearly 90% intact and an extremely precious collection of artefacts was preserved. Reconstruction, which began a year after the fire and should be finished next year, plans to restore the castle´s former glory. ..and according to a recent photograph, it looks like it will be a success.

3 NOSFERATU´S GRAVE

When Friedich Wilhelm Murnau chose this castle as the location of his world-famous film “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”, he was not far from the ideal setting. The Orava castle truly has somber and eerie nooks and only a courageous person would spend the night here. If you can get past the dark corridors, mysterious paintings and sculptures and the chapel with a mysterious atmosphere, you will uncover a very impressive castle with an extraordinary history and breathtaking views of the fierce Orava River which, somewhere deep below, bypasses the base of the rock which the castle is built upon.

2 LOIRE VALLEY FAR FROM FRANCE

The fascinating story of this castle was written by a pair of two men: John Pálffy and Jozef Hubert. They were considered odd by many; Jozef Hubert was an architect, John Pálffy a nobleman. It is rumored that Jozef Hubert, during the construction of what was to be a royal hunting castle, had trouble getting a word in. The strange owner with an exceptionally refined taste intervened in all aspects of the project. The result is the most beautiful castle in Slovakia and certainly one of the most beautiful in all of Europe. No, it is not the castle near Loire, but John Pálffy got his inspiration from France, and thanks to this merging of architectural styles from Loire into one, it can sincerely be called a castle: the castle of Bojnice.

By Simon Trnka

1 AN UNCROWNED KING

Its expansive area is its branding and also its main decoy. Its size has been ranked 5th worldwide. It is the only one to be registered as a UNESCO heritage sight due to its international significance. It is annually visited by tens of thousands of tourists from all over the worlds and offers breathtaking views of the former settlement, the UNESCO complex of Spiš canonry and the Tatras. The uncrowned king of all Slovak castles and one of the top castles throughout Europe: The Spiš Castle.

Let’s listen to Fujara!

posted in: Culture, UNESCO, Videos | 0

Slovakia has not only made the list of UNESCO sights that are of an immovable nature, but has also several inscriptions on the list of intangible UNESCO heritage. That of course only underlines the great cultural diversity and heritage of this small country. And one of those inscriptions is the Fujara. An instrument with magical sound that originated in the mountainous parts of Slovakia. Listen now to its great sound while reading something about it in a nutshell:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HymIzcdd4Y&w=420&h=315]

Fujara performance by Mr. Nadishana

Fujara is an over five feet (1.7m) long, deep-bass folk flute of Slovak shepherds. Cherished in the seclusion of Slovak mountains, Fujara has been able to maintain its simplicity over centuries. The Fujara flute uniquely combines a natural, easy to learn playing technique and an amazing tone!

Why is Fujara flute so fascinating ?

  • First of all, you do not have to be educated musician to play the Fujara flute. Fujara overtone playing technique feels so natural that even a beginner can play nice tunes.
  • However, the most fascinating is the Fujara tone! It is exactly the kind of tone which will make you stop and listen. Many say they will never forget hearing the Fujara for the first time … Just take a while to relax and listen to available fujara audio samples now.
  • It would dare say that the Fujara is the same to flutes as the Didjeridoo to trumpets. So simple, so archaic, but so amazing!
  • At the same time, every Fujara flute is a unique creative work of art – an original. Traditionally, it is made completely by hand from deciduous trees (elder, maple, locust tree), and it takes up to one month to build a good Fujara from a seasoned piece of upland wood.

Top 13 medieval towns in Slovakia every history buff should visit

posted in: Culture, Top, UNESCO | 4

Catastrophe for the Kingdom of Hungary followed when in 1526 the Turks defeated King Louis Jagellon at the battle of Moháč. Many towns on the territory of modern-day Hungary, Croatia and Serbia were totally destroyed, villages plundered, precious monuments devastated. It meant a tough end especially for many precious medieval monuments and buildings. One part of the kingdom remained almost intact; however, thanks to its successful defences. And so today we can still admire a lot of amazing architectural examples of medieval glory in the territory of Slovakia.

Many of you probably explored Bratislava and its precious medieval monuments. Only a few tourists, though, are probably familiar with the medieval masterpieces outside of the capital city.

Now is the time to discover them! Take our tour and come to explore and be amazed by the medieval beauty of the towns of Slovakia. Get out of Bratislava and…enjoy!

13. MEDIEVAL ERA IN ONE SQUARE

When you are in Poprad just look more carefully at the map and after a small while you will find a jewel. And it is even not that far from city centre. Spišská Sobota, a district of the city, is this small jewel with a beautiful medieval square which, not once, charmed King Matthias Corvinus. And no wonder.  So if you are up to explore some interesting places in Poprad after going on a hike, definitely visit this place.

12. A SMALL GEM IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

201603300809480.dsc_7396_large

A rather underrated town when compared to its other more famous Spiš neighbours, it has a large medieval lens-shaped square with burgher houses, an old monastery surrounded by walls and a fine example of the Spiš Renaissance.  If you are travelling to the famous Lubovňa castle, definitely give Podolínec an hour of your time. You won´t regret it.

11. ANCIENT CENTRE OF ZÁHORIE REGION

Near to the Czech border you can find splendid history  embodied in ten ecclesiastical monuments of various architectural styles from Romanesque to Baroque and beautifully decorated houses. And when you try the local delicacy, a sweet cake called Trdelnik together with a glass of the local wine you will be delighted you came to visit beautiful Skalica

10. CROWN OF SPIŠ REGION

Spiš castle with the square in Spišské Podhradie
Matej Sivák

The medieval square of Spišské Podhradie is bordered on one hill by the medieval UNESCO listed ecclesiastical complex of Spišská Kapitula (a magnificent medieval walled town ) and by the spectacular rocky giant of Spiš Castle on another. Looking for a better reason to visit this place than this one?

9. A STRONG RIVAL OF KOŠICE

Situated less than 45 minutes from Košice, Prešov resembles Košice in every sense. Having the same lens-shaped, though smaller, square with a Cathedral and several churches and with a lot more really fine examples of Renaissance architecture, Prešov is a perfect blend of town and city.

8. THE GOLDEN HEART IN THE HEART OF EUROPE

kremnica-5-v

It is not only its location in the hills, its glorious history, and the beautiful Church of St. Catharine with neighbouring castle complex which makes this town special. It is also the fact that it is home to one of the oldest continuously working companies in the world (the National Mint) and close to the spot which is considered by some to be very geographical centre of Europe. Whoever visits Kremnica will soon be charmed by this beautiful medieval town.

7. HISTORY WITH MARVELOUS VIEWS

By Jozef Mačutek

Here you can find both. For centuries, Kežmarok and Levoča competed to be the crown of the Spiš region. Even though Levoča won, it does not mean that Kežmarok lacks any of Levoča’s historical splendour. With its great Renaissance castle, neoclassical town hall, Gothic basilica and UNESCO listed wooden Articular church with its spectacular interior, the town is well worth a visit. And when we count the beautiful views of the Tatra mountains,  that is something Levoča does not have on a daily basis..

6. CASTLE CORONATING THE COUNTRY

phoca_thumb_l_dsc_4892

You won´t find a lot of towns like this one in Central Europe. Squeezed between a steep rock topped by the medieval castle and the River Váh, Trenčín boasts some really fine examples of medieval houses and a Gothic church, though the majority of the town is predominantly baroque in character. However, it still deserves a place on this list thanks to the minimum changes it has gone through thanks to its  location. Perhaps the Romans who left here their famous inscription on the rock may have said to each other: “This really is a very nice place in which to settle down” 🙂

5. MIDDLE AGES BETWEEN THE MOUNTAINS

Photo by Dusan Beno (article included)

In a place where the River Hron snakes it way between two hills lies one of the most beautiful Slovak towns. Banská Bystrica is not only a gateway to the magnificient Low Tatras National Park, but also a home to many great museums, medieval buildings and even a town castle complex.  So have a sip of the tasty local Urpiner beer and enjoy the atmosphere of this great place.

4. THE MOST GOTHIC TOWN

When it comes to the Gothic spirit and its masterpieces there is hardly any rival in Slovakia. Everything from the houses, the town hall to the Church of St. Aegidius have traces of Gothic architechture. The town looks very much like typical a Bavarian town and there is no similar example in Slovakia or any of its neighboring countries. Welcome to the UNESCO town Bardejov , a pure medieval Gothic jewel.

3. A TRULY MEDIEVAL RENAISSANCE PEARL

Dávid Čuj

Whether among the mysterious arcades of the Renaissance town hall, the dark Gothic cloister or the pillars of St. James the Basilics , the medieval spirit permeates this beautiful town. Just spend one day discovering  the medieval town houses, admiring  the highest wooden Gothic altar of the world and hiking up the Marian hill to explore an area that has barely changed since the Middle Ages. Does it sound like a dream? UNESCO Renaissance pearl Levoča offers an invitation for such a dream!

2. A SQUARE OF WONDERS

St. Elisabeth´s Cathedral has already been mentioned here, but it would be a mistake not to not mention its marvelous surroundings. Walk along Košice´s Main street (which is actually one of the biggest lenticular squares in the world) and you will find an amazing historical world where medieval houses and churches are mixed with the most beautiful neoclassical architecture in Slovakia.

1. A MUST SEE FOR MEDIEVAL LOVERS!

It is said that in this magical UNESCO town you can only go only up or down hill. Medieval burgher houses, churches, museums, castles, medieval fortresses charming cafes… All located in a steep terrain of an extinct volcano as a remembrance of a past mining glory. There are no flat spaces here but the effort of getting around is well worth it.. Surely one of the most beautiful towns in Europe with an inimitable genius loci. Welcome to Banská Štiavnica.

21 most remarkable historical landmarks in Slovakia

posted in: Culture, Top, UNESCO | 7

In all kinds of promotional material intended to lure tourists to Slovakia you will find words like “natural beauty”, “awesome national parks”, “great hikes”, “amazing trails”, “wonderful environment” etc. Of course, what they say is true. Slovakia is indeed a natural jewel and (forgive us Czech, Polish, Ukrainian and Hungarian fellow neighbours) boasts a great natural beauty that can be hardly challenged.

But Slovak nation also has one of the oldest historical traces in the region. And as a result, this history (common with Hungary, Austria and Germany) gave space to the creation of miraculous architectonic landmarks that can rival ones of much bigger countries. And indeed… the density of these landmarks is pretty high. Though, as usual, we do not want to “bore” your eyes with too many words 🙂 So here it comes! 21 most remarkable historical landmarks of Slovakia! Enjoy! (and give us a like, share or subcribe to the page below, thank you!)

21. BRATISLAVA CASTLE – THE PHOENIX RISING FROM THE ASHES!

Miroslav Petrasko

Destroyed twice in its writtten history: first by Napoleonic forces, secondly by communists (via “reconstruction”). Now it is being carefully reconstructed according to written documents and is currently being renovated. One of the symbols of the country with a stunning view in the old heart of the capital that definitely deserves its place on this list. The Bratislava Castle.

20. NITRA CASTLE CORONATING THE COUNTRY

26190986831_852a686cb7_b

From a distance, even before entering the city of Nitra, you can see this complex of ecclesiastical buildings of  St. Emeramus Cathedral and the castle complex. Simply Nitra´s most remarkable place to visit and a must when crossing this historical region full of chateaus and old medieval churches.

19. ONE OF THE BEST VIEWS ON MAGICAL BANSKÁ ŠTIAVNICA FROM ITS CALVARY!

A Baroque masterpiece of this UNESCO town with the BEST sunrises over the town. It was once on the UNESCO list of the most endangered landmarks of the world. Currently it illuminates the night sky to prove its past glory! Simply a magical place with stunning views!

18. ITALIAN RENAISSANCE IN THE HEART OF EUROPE REPRESENTED BY THE CHATEAU OF ZVOLEN

His name wast King Louis the Great of Anjou and he decided to have this beautiful chateau designed according to the Italian town palaces, simply in order to use it as his hunting sanctuary. No wonder! Contrarily, today it is used mostly for wedding ceremonies 🙂

17. THE BIGGEST CROWN OF THE WORLD DOMINATING ST. MARTIN’S BRATISLAVA CATHEDRAL

It is not only the mentioned crown, but the masterpiece of Georg Raphael Donner inside, a great organ and a copy of the Sancta Corona Hungariae (with the original one in Budapest’s Parliament) as proof of the common history that should definitely grab your attention! And the best time to visit is during Coronation Days (usually in June) which take you back to the past glory of this great cathedral.

16. HUGE KOMÁRNO FORTRESS ON THE CONFLUENCE OF TWO RIVERS!

What the Turks could not do the Russians managed to do. This fortress, used by Soviet forces as a military base during the occupation of Czechoslovakia after 1968, is one of the biggest fortresses of Europe, with highways as long as a few kilometers. With a little imagination you can still find a Theresian historical spirit in the huge corridors painted occasionally by Russian cyrilic graphitti. The submission to the UNESCO Tentative list only underlines the great importance of it.

15. PILGRIMAGE COMBINED WITH ARCHITECTONICAL MASTERPIECE IN THE NATIONAL BASILICA OF ŠAŠTÍN

Paulinenkloster_Šaštín-Stráže

A short stopover off the D1 highway snaking its way through the Záhorie region can change your day when you wsee the splendor of Baroque embodied in this beautifully decorated Basilica with an abbey. One of the most important places for Christians all around.

14. ITALIAN BAROQUE EMBODIED IN TRNAVA´S ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHEDRAL

This Baroque Cathedral looks stunning even from the outside. But that is little in comparison to its marvelously decorated interior. Enjoy the paintings and sculptures that have clear a Italian influence  in the town called, for its numerous churches and ecclesiastical buildings, “The Slovak Rome”.

13. SPLENDIND MIXTURE OF STYLES INSIDE BRATISLAVA´S TOWN HALL

You may be one of those tourists who just passed the courtyard of the Town Hall or even worse passed it through narrow street leading to Main Square. A mistake. Just give it a chance and enter the magnificent world of different architectonical styles, great baroque halls, a gothic chapel, amazing frescoes and sculptures and then climb up the tower to complete the mosaic of the great Bratislava´s history via the most beautiful view of the capital.

12. SURROUNDED BY THE MIDDLE AGES IN HRONSKÝ BEŇADIK – BENEDICTINE ABBEY

Almost a thousand-year-old Abbey located on the hill where the river Hron flows out of a little canyo. It is full mysteriously dark corridors, beautiful cloister, a relic of the Holy Blood from Veronica´s scarf and one of the most beautiful gothic churches of Slovakia. If you are on your way to Banská Štiavnica, this is simply a MUST!

11. HISTORY OF THE GEMER REGION IN THE BETLIAR CHATEAU

19 DANUBE, DEAD ARMS AND BIRDS LIFE

20 EVERYTHING IS ABOUT THE FOLK

22 THE STARS AND THE SILENCE

Slovakia do not have only spots crowded with tourists and visitors. For those enjoying loneliness and quite evenings there is Poloniny National Park on the far east of the country. One of the last almost untouched wilderness in Europe. You will find medieval, wooden churches scattered throughout the park and encounter more wolves than tourists. It is, hence, not a surprise that so far from civilization you will find the park of the night sky. Enjoy a clear dark sky undisturbed by any light smog. Filled with millions of stars surrounded by the poetic silence of nature.

Matúš Lošonský

23 RELAXATION, PEACE, EASE, CONTENTMENT

Just some of the synonyms of the name of this festival. When Michal Kaščák established the “Pohoda” festival, he wanted it to be headlined with world-famous musicians, combined with a very peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. Pohoda in Slovak means something like “just relax”. And this is exactly how it looks like despite the 30,000 visitors this festival received yearly. Welcoming the rising sun accompanied by classical music is an unforgettable experience. And this is just “one” of numerous similarly great festivals taking place every summer in Slovakia.

Martina Mlčúchová

24 INCREDIBLE MEDIEVAL ART

Get lost in one of many old medieval churches scattered through the Gemer and Spiš regions on a “Gothic Route” to explore Middle Ages through marvelous paintings.

25 MUD AND THE HEALING ONE

Thanks to almost 10 thousand mineral springs Slovakia can be called a water giant, with many spas scaterred throughout country. But healing with a mud? In Piešťany a globally renown spa town which offers completely unique healing treatments it is possible. How? By putting hot healing mud collected in the dead arms of the Váh river on your body. A mud with a price of a gold.
